Taken from just 30 miles (50 km) up, this view from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera reveals incredible details at Tranquility Base, the landing site for Apollo 11 and its crew in July 1969. Armstrong's shadow and the shadow of the camera are visible in the foreground. Tranquility Base, and what was left behind there when the astronauts departed, should be preserved and protected for all, for all time. But so what? NASA / GSFC / Arizona State Univ. NASA Probe Sees Apollo 11 Moon Landing Site from Space ... has recently beamed back new images of what Apollo 11's Tranquility Base looks ... to the Man in the Moon visible from Earth. This is the furthest distance from the lunar module traveled by either astronaut while on the moon. Forty-nine years ago on July 20, 1969, humanity stepped foot on another celestial body and into history. Of course, as an actual proposal for correlating geological events on Earth, a Tranquility Base golden spike is ridiculously impractical. There is nothing practical about the decision to formalize the Anthropocene Epoch.
