Gaia is an ESA mission to survey more than one billion stars in our Galaxy and its local neighbourhood in order to build the most precise 3D map of the Milky Way and answer questions about its structure, origin and evolution. ESA’s star mapping mission, Gaia, has shown our Milky Way galaxy is still enduring the effects of a near collision that set millions of stars moving like ripples on a pond. Using data from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) star-mapping satellite Gaia, scientists have been able to determine that the Milky Way is warping at a speed much faster than anticipated - suggesting our galaxy may be colliding with another star system. Galaxies, open and globular clusters in Gaia's sky map “With Hipparcos, we could only analyse the 3D structure and dynamics of stars in the Hyades, the nearest open cluster to the Sun, and measure distances for about 80 clusters up to 1600 light-years from us,” says Antonella Vallenari from the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) and the Astronomical Observatory of Padua, Italy.
The close encounter likely took place sometime in the past 300–900 million years.
The European Space Agency (ESA) has taken a "galactic census" of the Milky Way, unveiling the second major data release from the Gaia mission.
The spacecraft is designed for astrometry: measuring the positions, distances and motions of stars with unprecedented precision. This colour chart shows the distribution of 150 million stars in the Milky Way probed using data from the second release of ESA's Gaia mission in combination with infrared and optical surveys, with orange/yellow hues indicating a greater density of stars. And now you can follow the mission’s progress with a new app created by the University of Barcelona.
Gaia is a space observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 2013 and expected to operate until c. 2022. This same idea applies with our galaxy, yet we know the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy, and we know our Sun orbits the center of the galaxy from about 26,000 light-years out.
ESA’s Gaia: mapping the Milky Way ... For the last five years, the European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft has been creating the most detailed map of the Milky Way ever made. At this point Gaia was working so well that it was producing more data than originally foreseen, since it was able to see stars fainter than required. Global Gaia campaign reveals secrets of stellar pair: A 500-day global observation campaign spearheaded more than three years ago by ESA’s galaxy-mapping powerhouse Gaia has provided unprecedented insights into the binary system of stars that caused an unusual brightening of an even more distant star. Along … Gaia mapping the stars of the Milky Way. This reflected the optical technique of interferometry that was originally planned for use … By July 2014, Gaia was busy mapping parts of the sky that had been calibrated by ground telescopes, before its nominal scanning mode was entered in September. The European Space Agency (ESA)’s Gaia space observatory spent 22 months conducting a comprehensive survey of 1.7 billion stars in our sky, creating the most detailed star catalogue to date. The name ‘GAIA’ was originally derived as an acronym for Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics. It is a fully European mission. Credit: ESA/ATG medialab; background: ESO/S. Gaia spies, with its gigapixel eye, something beginning with “P”. Gaia, operated by the European Space Agency (ESA), surveys the sky from orbit to create the largest, most precise three-dimensional map of our galaxy.
Brunier The event may appear straightforward, but it marks the culmination of years of careful mission analysis work supported by orbital calculations. The Gaia mission was approved in 2000 as an ESA Cornerstone mission. Gaia launched on 19 December 2013 and now flies 1.5 million kilometres behind Earth as it orbits the Sun.
ESA / Science & Exploration / Space Science / Gaia The mass of a very young exoplanet has been revealed for the first time using data from ESA’s star mapping spacecraft Gaia and its predecessor, the quarter-century retired Hipparcos satellite.
The mapping begins. Mapping one billion stars in our Galaxy may seem like an impossible feat, but that’s exactly what ESA’s Gaia mission aims to do, with the ultimate goal of creating the largest, most precise 3D map of our Galaxy ever made.
